For reportedly leaving surgical scissors in the stomach of a patient, Aishatu Umar, leading to her death, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board has announced the immediate suspension of three personnel for medical negligence.

Admitting that the death of Aishatu, a mother of five, at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano was primarily due to dereliction of duty, the Board said the trio, directly involved in the case, have been barred from clinical duties with immediate effect.

A statement by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Samira Suleiman, said preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that surgical scissors were forgotten inside the patient’s body after a medical procedure.

Additionally, the statement said the case has been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary measures in line with professional standards and the law.

The Board’s Spokesperson further said: “The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form.”

Available reports had indicated that Aishatu Umar died after doctors allegedly abandoned surgical scissors in her stomach following an operation at the government-owned Urology Centre in Kano.

Her agonising husband, Abubakar Muhammad, explained that his wife suffered severe complications after the surgery, which eventually led to her death despite repeated complaints to the hospital.

The unfortunate incident sparked outrage among Kano residents while also raising serious concerns about poor oversight and accountability in public health institutions across the country.

Amid the public outcry, many Nigerians have joined the grieving family, especially on social media, to demand not only justice for the deceased but also urgent reforms in the nation’s public healthcare sector for effective service delivery.
