INEC eyes amended electoral act

BY SALISU IBRAHIM, KANO – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given assurance of its readiness to conduct a free and fair re -run elections in nine local government councils of Kano State come Saturday, January 25, 2020.

The Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC, Professor Risqua Shehu said on Tuesday that the electoral body has already developed a time-table of activities for the re-run poll.

Speaking at a Stakeholders’ meeting in the State, Prof Shehu said the re-run election will be conducted in 60 registration areas across the affected local governments councils.

According to him, the exercise will cover about 41,400 registered voters in 698 polling units and 166 voting points, bringing the total to 864 voting points.

He explained that by the Appeal Court judgments during its various sittings in Kaduna, re-run elections were ordered in some Federal and state Constituencies.

The Resident Commissioner listed the areas to include two from Kiru/ Bebeji and Tudun Wada Doguwa; two polling Units in Kumbotso Federal Constituency and 12 polling Units in four other state constituencies in Bunkure, Madobi, Minjibir and Rogo involving all the participating political parties.

Prof Shehu said with 11 days to the January 25 re-run date, INEC in the State has taken delivery and distributed all non-sensitive materials to its offices in the affected local government areas.

He also disclosed that batching of the material already in place, the Commission is expecting the arrival of the sensitive materials from the headquarters and all political parties will be informed as soon as Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch in the Stste takes delivery of them.
