Following public uproar and the escape of a python from the home of the former Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris, who was domesticating the wild animals, the Kano Zoo that included, a lion, python, a crocodile among others in his residence, the Kano Zoo has successfully evacuated the dangerous animals.
One of the wild beasts, a python had already escaped from the residence of Idris.
Following some trending videos in which Idris was seen to be petting some wild animals that included, a lion, a python, a crocodile, amongst other wild animals, the management of the Kano Zoo quickly and decisively moved to the area to avert possible consequences.
During their investigation, the management of the Zoo discovered that the animals were being kept in the residence of the former AGF.
Accordingly, the management of the Kano Zoo evacuated the wild animals to an appropriate environment created for them for safe and protective keeping.
Mr Sadik Kura Muhammad, Managing Director of Kano Zoo, announced these when he featured on a radio programme in Kano, saying that the python, which earlier escaped from the home of Idris, has been recovered and moved to the Zoo.
Muhammad said the former Accountant General of the Federation willingly handed over the animals to the authorities without raising an eye brow.
Muhammad further said; “There is a law called the Wild Animal Law, which permits individuals to keep certain wild animals in their homes.
“These may include endangered and non-endangered species. However, the license must be renewed annually to ensure safety.
“When I heard about the situation, I verified that he had a license and that the lion was still a cub, posing no harm. But once such animals reach a certain age, they must be transferred to the zoo. Before any animal becomes potentially harmful, it should already be in our custody.
“We collected the wild animals, and they are now safely housed in Kano Zoo. We conducted the evacuation at night, so there was no cause for alarm,” he said.
Mr Idris, a former Accountant General of the Federation during the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari, was arrested in 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly diverting N109.5 billion public funds and presently facing trial.
