Kwankwasiyya, PDP Faction Kick As APC Sweeps Kano LG Polls
Ruling party captures all 44 chairmanship, 484 councillorship seats
Kwankwasiyya Movement
A faction of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to a former Governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has described as a charade and mockery of Nigeria’s democracy the Saturday, January 16, 2021 Local government elections in the North West state.
The faction had opted to shun the Councils’ poll in which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) captured all the 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship seats that were in contest, insisting the election was a sham.
However, the Kwankwasiyya movement’s no-show decision did not stop the contending PDP faction from participating in the exercise largely considered as peaceful.
However, the Chairman of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KASEIC), Ibrahim Sheka, said APC candidates emerged overwhelming winners in all the chairmanship and councillorship positions contested.
Sheka, who announced the elections’ results on Sunday in Kano, disclosed that; “The total votes scored by the candidates is 2,530.577 million.”
He however said; “Work is still in progress to ascertain the total votes scored by candidates of other political parties.”
According to him, the election was generally peaceful in all the 11,500 polling units across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state.
The KSIEC chairman, who praised Governor Abdullahi Ganduje for his support and non-interference in the electoral process, also lauded the Civil Society Organisations for their support towards ensuring free, fair and credible election.
KASEIC documents cited by the media indicate that 12 political parties participated in the councils’ election.
