Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declared that members of the Labour Party (LP), including Mr Peter Obi, the Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, are at liberty to associate with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in any capacity either as guest, observer, or visitor.
President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who stated this, noted that it should be clearly understood that such associations are personal decisions and do not signal any formal coalition or merger between the LP and the ADC.
This was as the NLC President outrightly dismissed the ultimatum issued by the Julius Abure‑led faction demanding that Obi should resign within 48 hours if he aligns with the ADC.
Ajaero particularly questioned the legitimacy of Abure-led faction and reinforced the founding role of the NLC in the Labour Party.
He also stated unequivocally that the Labour Party remains independent and not in any coalition or merger with any other political party.
He therefore cautioned against conflating the actions of individuals with the official stance of the Labour Party, stressing that they are distinct and separate.
While speaking on why Peter Obi has not resigned from the Labour Party (LP), Ajaero jibed, saying; “If I go somewhere now, it doesn’t mean that it is Labour Party that went there”. Ajaero’s comments followed recent reactions from some quarters with regards to Obi’s engagement with the leadership of the ADC.
The NLC President urged workers, artisans, farmers, and the liberal class to own their party, stressing that the LP’s low-cost nomination process is a hallmark of its grassroots ethos.
