BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – The Emir of Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, Alhaji Zubair Jibril Mai Gwari II, on Tuesday, took a critical look at the insecurity situation in the country saying we must not continue to manipulate issues of national importance in favour of political inclination

This is just as he called on politicians to fear God and avoid imposing their personal and jaundiced wills over a collective mission that can better societies.

The traditional ruler who spoke at ‘The 2018 Blueprint Newspapers Impact Series and Award’ ceremony in Abuja, noted that injustice, nepotism, bribery and corruption, religious and political intolerance, as well as unemployment have cost the nation a great deal over time.

Mai Gwari observed that weak judicial system, culture of impunity and the confused system of governance among others are responsible for the present unacceptable state of insecurity in the country which he stressed has seriously undermined internal cohesion and co-existence in the country.

In his words; “Insecurity with all its attendant allies has ravaged the country considerably. Armed robbery, armed banditry, Boko Haram terrorism, Niger Delta militancy, cattle rustling, ethno-religious crises, and others have for a long time thwarted an optimal development in Nigeria.

“The spate of killings in the North-East, North West and the North Central of the country are clear indicators that insecurity has eaten deep into the fabrics of Nigerians.

“Our story in Birnin Gwari of Kaduna state is that of agony and sympathy. The armed bandits have made hell out of people’s lives in the areas. They have completely ravaged the area by armed robbery, armed banditry, cattle rustling and abductions.”

Commenting on the establishment of State Police in the country, the Emir said the necessity for State Police across the country cannot be pushed away and therefore gave his support the setting up of State Police saying it would assist in addressing the contemporary necessity.

He further said; “Many many have opposed the establishment of state police because of political and personal gains but State Police has worked in other climes. I therefore see this as a timely necessity. It is the only hope left for us to curb rising cases of insecurity in our localities.”

Alhaji Zubair Jibril  therefore appealed to the federal and state governments to show more commitment in fighting the scourge of insecurity that have ravaged parts of the country.

In his own remarks, a representative of the National Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Malam Awaal Haruna called on the National Assembly to revisit the social media bills with a view of regulating the excesses, saying that after reading the social media, one would have the impression that Nigeria is on fire.

He called on those in authority to rise to the occasion to curtail the dangers posed by social media else the country will risk a breakup.
