Massacre: Benue People May Be Forced To Defend Themselves – Sen. David Mark Says

Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has warned that the unwarranted massacre taking place in Benue State may compel residents to resort to self-help to defend themselves.

Senator Mark, who stated this following the escalating killings of people in Benue State, described the killings as “senseless, tragic, and unacceptable”, stressing that the government is clearly demonstrating its failure with regards to its fundamental duty of protecting lives and property.

While expressing deep concern over the continued and escalating killings of in the State, Mark decried the deteriorating security situation which he noted has led to the loss of hundreds of lives and widespread destruction of property.

The former President of the Senate, emphasized that the primary responsibility of any government is the welfare and security of its citizens.

In the words of Mark; “Any deviation from this mandate constitutes a gross disservice to the people. This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with. “Government must rise to its responsibility, or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” he said.

Mark therefore urged the Federal Government to fulfill its constitutional obligation of safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians.

The former lawmaker also called on the State government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia, to intensify efforts in ensuring the safety of the people.

He appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies in identifying and apprehending those behind the heinous crimes.

To the people of Benue,

Mark offered a message of solidarity and resilience to the people of Benue State, saying; “This is a trying moment for our people. We must unite, mobilize, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must refuse to bow to fear.”

The former President of the Senate however said that despite the ongoing provocations, the people should remain law-abiding, stay united, and uphold the enduring spirit of being their brother’s keeper.
