The Drunkards Association of Ghana (DAG), has declared that the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi must have a commensurate effect in the reduction in prices of alcohol in the country.

The association has therefore issued a three-week ultimatum to the government to as a matter of national concern, reduce the prices of alcoholic beverages or face an unprecedented nationwide protest from its over 16.6 million members.

In a video posted on X on Sunday, the leader of the association, identified as Moses Obuah, warned the government to act swiftly in response to its demand or be prepared to face the consequences.

Obuah said; “To date, the prices of alcoholic drinks keep going up. If you purchase alcohol, there is an increment of about 15%, and this affects vendors.

“We have learnt that the cedi has gained some strength and the price of some items has been reduced. However, the cost of alcohol remains high.

“We are therefore calling on President John Dramani Mahama and his Minister for Trade and Industry to do something about the prices.

“We have given them a three-week grace period to meet us so we can deliberate on how to reduce the prices of alcohol. “We are not making this call for only alcoholic drinks but for the non-alcoholic ones as well,” he said.

The Drunkards Association’s warning followed a remarkable rebound by the Ghanaian cedi in 2025, which gained about 50 per cent appreciation against the US dollar, thus making it the best-performing currency globally so far this year.

The DAG noted that Bloomberg data showed that the cedi which opened the year with about ₵15 per dollar, now trades close to ₵10.

The association stressed that the currency strength should translate to lower prices for imported goods, particularly alcohol.
