Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, spouse of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President, has finished serving her prison term in the United Kingdom and returned to Nigeria on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

Beatrice Ekweremadu, Senator Ekweremadu and Dr Obinna Obeta were sentenced to prison by a Court in the United Kingdom for their involvement in organ harvesting.

While her husband, Senator Ekweremadu was sentenced to 9 years and 8 months, Beatrice bagged six years imprisonment and Dr Obinna Obeta 10 years in prison under highly controversial circumstances involving an organ donor for their daughter Sonia, who suffers from kidney issues.

Her return on Tuesday was greeted with celebration across Enugu State particularly, their hometown of Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, where crowds gathered in large numbers to rejoice at her homecoming.

The Ekweremadus and Obeta were convicted of conspiracy to arrange for a young man, identified as David Nwamini, to travel to Britain, where he was to be exploited for his kidney, needed for their ailing daughter, Sonia.

Following a six-week trial and conviction at London’s Central Criminal Court, Senator Ekweremadu, his wife and Dr Obeta were found guilty of violating the Modern Slavery Act on May 5, 2023.
