BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has praised the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, Sylvester Abiodun Alabi, for quickly responding to quell the recent protest by Students of Bauchi State College of Agriculture in Yelwa.

According to the NAN leadership, the prompt action taken by Alabi and his gallant officers proved timely and avoided any untoward incident.

Addressing a press conference at Destination Hotel in Bauchi, the National Director, Administration and Strategy of NANS, Prince Mohammed Sani Hassan described the action as ‘highly commendable, noting that their prompt response brought the situation under control in a professional manner and in line with the international best-policing practice of crisis management through dialogue and effective stakeholding

He said the action of CP Abiodun Alabi is “a true definition of effective policing in the 21st century and setting a standard to enhance community policing in Bauchi state.

“This action has prevented further escalation of the protest and its possible degeneration to a violent situation”, the Association said.

“Furthermore, payment of medical bills for students who sustained various degrees of injuries during the incident and replacement of the damaged equipment of the AIT Reporter, who was monitoring the protest showed that the CP is not only a professional but a true public relations practitioner.

“The gesture exhibited by the Commissioner and his well-coordinated team will no doubt foster Peace and strengthen the existing mutual relationship between the Nigerian police force, Nigerian Students and the general public”, the students’ body noted.

Sani Hassan stated that the Police action has also “demonstrated a high level of capacity and dialogue approach in resolving conflicts and land dispute of this nature”, adding that;

“We are using this medium to call on all Nigerian Students to always adopt dialogue as the best way of resolving conflicts as peace Ambassadors at all times.”

In NANS’ submission; “This gesture is the first of its kind in the state and we call on Nigerian Students to continue to see the Nigerian police force as their friends in their respective campuses and ignore any act capable of bringing violence to the campuses.

“We call for others to emulate his suits when matters of this nature unfold in the future. We are proud to be associated with this exceptional police officer and will continue to support him in our capacity to foster Peace and Unity in Bauchi State and the country at large.”

Further speaking about the Police Commissioner in constructive terms, NANS described him as “an icon of diligent service, a sincere and caring father of Nigerian students.”
