Nasarawa Owes Local Government Workers N25 Billion Salary Arrears

BY BABA AHMED, LAFIA – Contrary to claims by the administration of Governor Umaru  Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State that it is not indebted, Local Government workers in the state are being owed about N25 billion salary arrears.
During the inauguration of the state’s transition committee, Governor Al-Makura had declared that his administration was not indebted.
The N25 billion represents between 8 to 13 months’ salary arrears which is an accumulation of percentage payment made by the governor from 2015 to 2018 for the eight out of the 13 Local Government Areas in the state as well as seven out of the 18 Development Areas of the state.
Checks by Forefront News showed a breakdown of the indebtedness of the 8 Local Government Areas as follows: Toto Local Government is being owed 11 months, Doma 13, Keana 8, Obi 11, Lafia 12, Akwanga 14, Wamba 5, and Kokona 11 months respectively
Similarly, the Development Areas namely Gadabuke 11 months, Umaisha 9, Lafia North 18 months, Panda 14 months, Giza 8 months, Ekye 13 months and Jenkwe 18 months.
Last week, the state commissioner for Local Government, Mr. Haruna Oshegba announced that the state needs about N2.2 billion to pay hundred percent salaries of Local Government staff.
Oshegba said that the ministry had to augment the federal allocation for the month of March with N404, million to enable it pay 100 percent salary to Local Government workers, adding that after the statutory deductions, the ministry was left with N1. 7 billion.
