- As Coach Eguavoen resigns
BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup slated for Qatar late this year, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sent the entire technical crew of the team packing with immediate effect.
In its fury, the Federation has withdrawn the two-and-half years’ contract offered to the coaches as well as terminated the appointment of the entire coaching crew forthwith.
A statement by the NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said; “We thank the coaches and team officials for their services to the nation and wish them success in their future endeavours.”
The nation’s football governing body is expected to announce a new technical crew after properly reviewing the processes that will lead to the much-awaited reinvigoration of the Super Eagles to appropriately face future challenges.
Meanwhile, reports said the erstwhile Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Coach Augustine Eguavoen had thrown in the towel by resigning as the National football team handler with immediate effect.
This follows his failure to qualify Nigeria for the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament scheduled to hold in the oil-rich nation of Qatar between November and December this year.
According to the reports, in sending an official resignation letter to the NFF, Eguavoen however indicated he will be returning to his former role as Technical Director of all national teams.
Eguavoen’s woeful performance and failure to beat the Black Stars of Ghana over two legs for the Qatar World Cup ticket had generated growing calls for him to resign from the top job as Eagles’ handler.
The former Nigerian international was handed a two-year contract two days before the first leg of the World Cup play-off against Ghana.
