Nigeria Customs Impound Arms’ Container At Tin Can Port
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has confirmed the interception of a container suspected to be laden with arms and ammunition at the Tin Can Island Port.
Public Relations Officer of the Tin Can Island Command, Mr Uche Ejesieme, confirmed the seizure in a statement issued on Saturday.
Ejesieme, who disclosed that the container was impounded on Friday in one of the port’s terminals during a routine examination, said; “Following this development, the Command intimated the terminal operators and requested that the suspected container be transferred to our enforcement unit for 100 per cent examination.
“This suffices that the information is still sketchy but we do hope that comprehensive information will be availed after the 100 per cent examination.”
According to him, following the development and other discoveries made, the Command “will communicate officially to the customs management as well our zonal coordinator in line with service protocol.”
Consequently, the Command Spokesperson urged the public to remain calm as the Service moves to get critical information and additional intelligence on which a detailed report on the incident would be based for further action.
Insider sources hinted that the intercepted container, loaded with cartons of guns, measures about 1×40 feet with the number TRHU8058369, and was deceitfully declared as plasma television sets.
The sources also disclosed that the clearing license used for clearing the cargo was commercialised, meaning the clearing agent who owns the license did a sublet that enabled a third party to use it for the said transaction. – With agency report
