North-central Peace Building Workshop Opens in Jos

CHAMBERLAIN ODEY, JOS – A peace-building and conflict resolution workshop for youth leaders and other stakeholders in the North-central geopolitical zone has opened in Jos, the Plateau state capital.
Declared open by the Plateau state governor, Simon Bako Lalong, who was represented by the Secretary to the Plateau state government, Rufus Bature, the three-day event has drawn representatives of youth groups in the North-central region and other stakeholders.
In his address at the occasion, Lalong emphasized the imperative of peace in the social and economic development of the region, calling on the youth to maximise the benefits of the workshop, to equip them to function meaningfully in the national process of socio-economic and political growth.
Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Adesola Olusade, said the workshop was put together by the Ministry to organise and prepare the Youth for leadership responsibilities by enhancing their understanding of background to issues, foster cross cultural understanding, especially in relation to peace-building and conflict resolution.
In his remarks, the permanent secretary noted the peace building and conflict resolution programme of the Ministry is “targeted at
enhancing the capacity of young people, community and religious youth leaders among other stakeholders in evolving techniques and strategies for resolving disputes and conflicts without resorting to violence”.
In a goodwill message, the Gbong Gwom Jos and chairman of the Plateau State Traditional Rulers Council, Jacob Gyang Buba, urged the youth to restrain themselves from indulgence in deviant habits and negative behaviours such as drugging, alcoholism, and sundry destructive pastimes, and advised them to always strive to understanding the background and disposition of others, and sometimes sacrifice certain opportunities for peace to thrive.
In a similar goodwill message by the National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dickson Akoh, summarily tasked all, including the youth, to always work for peace, sustain peace, live in peace, so that at the end they will truly Rest in Peace.
Holding at the Leadership Training Institute, Shere Hills, Jos, the workshop which is expected to generate a communiqué on peace building and conflict resolution, will come to a close on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
