NUJ Council Poll: Ortom, NAWOJ Congratulate Ogbeche
BY EDMOND ODOK, ABUJA – The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, have joined the growing list of individuals and organisations congratulating Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche on his re-election as the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council.
Governor Ortom, who described Ogbeche’s re-election as “well-deserved” considering his performance in his first tenure, applauded journalists in Abuja for the “peaceful and democratic manner the election was conducted.”

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nathaniel Ikyur on Sunday, Governor Ortom said; “I wish to on behalf of the good and peace-loving people of Benue State, heartily congratulate Mr. Emmanuel Ogbeche on his reelection for another term of three years. Your victory was well-deserved and expected because of your landmark achievements in the past three years.
“I believe your colleagues were enthralled by your outstanding performance hence their decision to vote massively for your reelection.
“I wish you a successful tenure and enjoin you and the new executive to place nation above personal and practice journalism in strict compliance with the ethics of the profession.
“As a strong advocate of peace, justice and equity and fairness, I urge the chairman with his members in Abuja to speak truth to power through their reportage and eschew fake news, which is doing more harm than good to the nation”
In praying for their successful tenure, the governor urged Ogbeche and his executives to work for the unity of the nation, saying; “I pray that you will enjoy a successful and peaceful tenure and continue to push for a Nigeria, where peace, justice and fairness takes the centre stage”
Inclusion of more women excites NAWOJ
In their congratulatory message, NAWOJ, FCT Chapter, noted that Comrade Ogbeche was deserving of his re-election as NUJ, FCT Council chairman.
The Chapter also congratulated other executive members, saying the inclusion of more women in the Council is a welcome development that will further promote the female gender participation in governance.
NAWOJ expressed happiness that three elected female officers are members of the Chapter and listed them as Aishatu Ali Kadala of the Aso Radio and TV Chapel, who returned for a second term as Council Treasurer; Dorcas Jonah of NAN Chapel as Assistant Secretary; and Gloria Essien of VON Chapel as Financial Secretary.
In a statement by its Chairperson, Comrade Annah Daniel, and Secretary, Nkeiru Nnoli Okeke, the Association said Ogbeche’s reelection is a “well deserving feat given his proven integrity, hardwork and pedigree in the last three years.”
The Chapter further described the victory and re-election as “timely and a testament of his contributions, commitments as well as diligence in giving new face of value to the union and the profession as an opportunity to consolidate on what has been achieved so far.”
While reiterating NAWOJ’s commitment to building a formidable force with the new NUJ FCT executive in advancing and taking the profession to greater heights, the Chapter expressed optimism that the team will not disappoint in delivering on their mandate towards building a better and desired profession.
The statement also reminded the reelected Chairman to be accountable in line with his acceptance speech that the “Union has sent them on a new assignment.”
Comrade Ogbeche of Abuja Inquirer amassed a total of 450 votes to defeat his only opponent, Donald Ugwu of News agency of Nigeria (NAN), who polled 59 votes.
All other members of the executive were returned on opposed at the election held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the NUJ Council Secretariat in Utako, Abuja.
The new executive have since been sworn to steers the Council’s affairs for the next three years.
