- Election holds October 4, 2021 in Umuahia
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has put in place an eight-member Credentials Committee to conduct elections during its seventh (7th) Triennial National Delegates’ Conference slated for Monday, October 4, 2021, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
Headed by a National Officer and Deputy Editor of News Express, Garba Muhammad, as chairman, the Committee has Abia State Council Chairman of NUJ, Victor Ndukwe, as its Secretary.
Also listed as members of the committee are: NAWOJ National President, Ladi Bala; FCT Council Chairman, Ogbeche Emmanuel; Cross River Council Chairman, Udu Victor; and Sokoto State Council Chairman, Isa A. Shuni.
Others include: Secretary, Ondo State Council, Prince Leke Adegbite; and Secretary, Borno State Council, Mohammed Ibrahim.
The Credentials’ Committee was constituted at the Union’s NEC meeting held in Abuja on Saturday, August 7 and captured in a communique signed by Secretary, Zone A, Abdullahi Isma Yamadi; Chairman, Ondo Council, Adetona Aderoboye; Secretary, Abia Council, Adaeze Ralph Igbokwe; and NUJ National Secretary, Shuaibu Leman Usman.
The current Central Working Committee (CWC)’s three-year tenure will expire on October 5, 2021 having been sworn in on October 5, 2018 during the NUJ 6th Triennial Delegates’ Conference that took place in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital between October 4 and 5, 2018.
By the NUJ constitution, the CWC comprises the National President, Deputy National President, National Treasurer, National Financial Secretary, Zonal Vice Presidents and Zonal Secretaries.
Also serving in the CWC as appointed officers are: the National Secretary and the two Assistant National Secretaries while national chairmen of the two NUJ affiliates (SWAN and NAWOJ) are automatic ex-officio members of the CWC among others.
Meanwhile, the NUJ has come down hard on members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) who have distanced themselves from the Union and its activities.
As part of its NEC Communique, the NUJ warned that henceforth such sportswriters would no longer enjoy the Union’s patronage and professional coverage, including using the facilities of NUJ anywhere in the country.
In the move aimed at whipping into line dissident SWAN members, the NUJ maintained that; “only sportswriters who pledge allegiance to the State Councils of the NUJ at the State levels would henceforth be recognised.”
