  • Ex-President seeks conversations across fault lines, primordial proclivities

BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM – Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi on Thursday met with Governor Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

Chief Obasanjo and Fayemi are attending the ongoing Port Harcourt International Conference 2023 which is currently taking place at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre, Port Harcourt.

The former President, who delivered the keynote address at the Conference tagged, “Deepening Democratic Culture and Institutions for Sustainable Development and Security in Nigeria”, lamented that the nation is not making progress due to a lack of conversations across fault lines and primordial proclivities.

According to him; “We all have opinions and we have prescriptions for all the problems of Nigeria. Yet, the country is not making progress. Most of us are experts in what we know little or nothing about and ignoramuses in what is our duty and responsibility.

“We have tried all sorts of regimes, ideologies, planning strategies, and personalities in power: the so-called new breed did not show that they were different. Equally, states run by professors, retired military officers, and other professionals including teachers did not experience visible and substantial improvements.”

Admitting that there had been some outstanding leaders at various levels of power, the man, popularly referred to as the ‘Ota Farmer’, however, stated that no tree had ever made a forest, as the good ones were few and far in between and did not form a critical mass.

The former President later visited the Rivers Governor at his residence in Port Harcourt but issues discussed during the private meeting were not made public as at press time.
