In what appears a total submission to the whims and caprices of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike-led group in the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Independent National Electoral Commission has declared that it will not recognise the National Working Committee of the Party led by Kabiru Turaki, SAN.
The nation’s electoral body that is expected to exhibit neutrality in its relationship with political parties, referenced its position to existing court judgments and ongoing legal proceedings.
Despite the court judgments and ongoing legal proceedings, INEC had last week held a meeting with both the Turaki-led National Working Committee and the Wike-led group.
INEC in a letter dated December 22, 2025 and signed by its Secretary, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony, stated it could not act on requests to acknowledge or publish the list of national officers claimed to have been elected at the National Convention of the PDP held on 15th and 16th November 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The commission explained that its decision was hinged on current court rulings and pending litigation regarding the leadership crisis within the PDP.
INEC further said that it would be inappropriate to recognise any factional officers while the matter is still before the courts.
INEC insisted that recognising any factional national officers while the matter remained before the courts would be improper, emphasising that due process must be allowed to run its full course before any action could be taken.
