…Says, opponents of the event are detractors
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 dared the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as it vowed that it is going ahead with its scheduled November 15 to 16 National Convention, slated for Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The decision by the PDP to proceed with the convention is coming against the backdrop of a meeting which held on Monday nighty in Abuja by the pro-Wike camp that gave the party conditions to meet before holding the National Convention.
The Wike-led group on the aegis of ‘Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders’ which met in the FCT Minister’s residence, presented fresh demands if the convention is to hold.
They demanded that the National Chairman of the party should remain in the North-Central zone, and insisted that there should be no form of micro-zoning of the presidential position for peace and stability within the party.
The Wike-led group also called for fresh, transparent, and inclusive congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States, and a fresh and legitimate South-East Zonal Congress.
The group specifically demanded that the South-South Congress held in Calabar be respected.
A communique issued by the group stated that a credible National Convention must be anchored on transparency, fairness, and respect for the rule of law as well as inclusivity to ensure the party can reconcile internal disputes, uphold fairness, and respect constitutional processes.
However, the National Chairman of the Party, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, declared while inaugurating members of the Convention Committee, that opponents of the scheduled convention were “detractors” of the party, stressing that they would not succeed.
Damaum emphasised that the PDP is alive and strong and ready to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
