PDP: Makarfi’s Caretaker Committee Gets 4-Month Extension

BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – Ahead of its Saturday August 12, 2017 Non-elective National Convention, the National Executive Committee (NEC) Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has proposed a four-month extension for the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC).
The PDP NEC said the extension would allow the Caretaker Committee time to prepare and conduct an elective National Convention for the election of new officers for the Party.
This was part of the resolutions of the PDP 75th NEC meeting that was proposed for ratification at today’s National Convention.
The NEC meeting, which ended on Friday night at the party’s National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, also received a memo on issues concerning some states in the South-west, specifically Osun, Lagos and Ogun and resolved that the matter be taken to the National Convention for ratification.
Similarly, the PDP NEC unanimously affirmed that the dissolution of the Anambra State and the setting up of the State Caretaker Committee and all existing recognized states and zonal executives be referred to the Special Non-elective National Convention for affirmation.
The meeting also deliberated on the issues of parallel Congresses in some states of the federation and resolved that all matters relating to such states should be referred to the Convention for final decision.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, thanked members of the party for the overwhelming attendance in spite of the short notice.
While briefing the NEC on the state of preparedness, Chairman of the planning committee for the National Non-elective Convention, Governor Arthur Okowa of Delta State, assured that all was set for a successful Convention on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at the Eagle Square, Abuja by 10am.
The meeting, which was presided over by the National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, was attended by former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Ayim Pius Ayim, Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of PDP Governors Forum, Ayodele Fayose, Governor of Delta state and Chairman of the 2017 Special Non-Elective National Convention Planning Committee, Sen. Arthur I. Okowa, Senate Minority Leader, Chief Godswill Akpabio and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT), Senator Walid Jubril, among others.
