Peter Obi Presidency: Wike, Ortom, Makinde, 2 Other PDP Govs Storm Enugu
- Heightened permutations worry PDP
Permutations for the next year’s general elections heightened on Sunday as five Governors elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform stormed Enugu State to further chart the way forward from the seeming intractable crisis rocking the party.
Already, speculations are rife that the meeting has thrown the camp of PDP presidential flag bearer and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar into a frenzy over subdued push for the governors and their supporters to throw their weights behind the Labour Party (LP)’s Presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi in 2023.
A reliable associate to one of the governors hinted that the anxiety engulfing the Atiku’s camp and the country’s main opposition party arose from the fact that discussions at the meeting had soft spot for the former Anambra State governor’s presidential ambition.
The source said efforts to resolve the crisis, birthed by the face-off involving Wike, Atiku and the PDP National Chairman, Dr Iyorcha Ayu have so far failed to achieve the expected results with party stakeholders becoming more frustrated as days go by.
The governor’s associate further said given how issues are being canvassed and laid out during the meeting described as “robust engagement”, the February 2023 presidential elections would be full of surprises for the perceived leading candidates of PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as Nigerians at large.
It was gathered that the meeting, featuring Governors Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Okezie Ikeazu of Abia State and the host Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, was not found wanting in considering options available going into the elections next year.
According to the insider, the Peter Obi’s candidacy option seems to be on the table for the five governors as they are said to have expressed dissatisfaction with what the PDP flag bearer, Atiku is offering the group as incentives to support him.
Furthermore, the sources said most worrisome is the Wike’s group decision to stay put and fight their battle within the PDP as against the popular path of politicians dumping their party for another when aggrieved.
