Police Arrest Alhassan Doguwa At Kano Airport
BY OUR CORRESPONDENT – Fingered for his alleged role in the killing of several persons and burning of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) secretariat during the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly polls in Kano State, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, is currently cooling feet in Police custody.
This follows the Police confirmation that at least three persons were killed when some hoodlums set ablaze NNPP’s campaign secretariat in the Tudunwada area of the State.
Reports indicated that two persons were burnt to death in the crisis that broke out during the collation of the Doguwa/Tudunwada House of Representatives election result, which Doguwa was eventually declared to have won.
According to Police sources, Doguwa was arrested at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport while boarding a flight to Abuja over allegations that he personally led the thugs that razed the NNPP secretariat where at least two lives were lost.
In confirming the latest development, one of the Police sources volunteered; “He is currently cooling off in the state Criminal Investigation Department as the Command commences investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dastardly act.”
The lawmaker, who was elected for his 5th term on Saturday, had earlier held a media press briefing to deny any culpability in the unfortunate incident, maintaining that he only got privileged information the police were looking for him.
Claiming that he had not received any formal invitation from the State Police Command, Doguwa also denied allegations that he shot at several individuals during the fracas that broke out, saying he does not own a gun nor does he know how to fire one.
Further defending himself, the House Leader said; “I never held a gun. I don’t even know how to hold a gun. I also never held any weapon throughout the election”, noting that the crisis started when NNPP supporters came with the mindset of burning the INEC office and were successfully repelled by some All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters.
However, efforts to contact the spokesman of the Kano Police Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on the development failed to yield fruits as calls put to the official phone line did not go through until press time.
