Police Nab 15 Cultists In Adamawa State Varsity, Mubi
- University shuts down academic activities
BY AUSTIN AJAYI, YOLA – Determined to rid Adamawa state of cult activities, especially in institutions of higher learning, the State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 15 suspected cult members during an initiation ritual at the Adamawa State University, Mubi.
The Command said on Sunday that during the raid on the suspected cult members’ initiation ground in the bush, the operatives recovered axes, charms among other items from the suspects.
In a press statement by its spokesperson, DSP Suleman Yahaya Nguroje, the Police disclosed that the suspects were apprehended in the early hours of Sunday, November 21, 2021.
According to the statement made available to journalists; “The suspects belong to the most notorious cult group, Neo Black Movement who allegedly initiates other students as well as wreck havoc in the institution”.
Meanwhile, the University authorities said a decision has been taken to temporarily suspend academic and other activities in the institution to address urgent matters affecting the Students’ welfare.
A circular by the School Academic Secretary, Mrs A. J. Tafida, that was made available to newsmen by the Information Officer, Belmond Benson, on Sunday, said the development followed the 8th extra ordinary meeting by the institution’s Senate that ordered the immediate suspension of activities.
The circular said; “The senate during meeting held on the 18th November, 2021, considered a report on hostel allocation racketeering on the portal and resolved that registration for the 2021/ 2022 academic session and other activities be suspended and advised all students to vacate the university premises”.
The University’s management had last week constituted a committee with a mandate to investigate hostel racketeering on the portal. The Committee was given two (2) weeks within which to submit its findings.
