The Police in Rivers State are on the trail of some suspected cultists for killing and beheading a Commander of the disbanded Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), Alex Umezuruike, in Omudioga community, Emohua Local Government Area of the State.
According to the Command, which described the development as ‘tragic’, its officers are currently working round the clock to unravel circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident with the State Commissioner of Police, Eboka Friday, ordering a full-scale investigation into the case.
Spokesman of the Command, Superintendent (SP) Nnamdi Omoni said though the police have restored normalcy in the affected community, all hands are on deck to fish out perpetrators of the dastardly act and bring them to justice.
“We have been able to restore normalcy to the area and our men are there”, Omoni assured, even as he also confirmed that the dismembered body of the victim was recovered and deposited in the mortuary.
However, the shocking incident has thrown the Omudioga community into utter confusion and panic with residents pleading with the Police authorities to urgently beef up security around the area for their safety and protection.
According to reports on the incident, the gunmen invaded Umezurike’s home late on Tuesday night and shot him many times. Community sources said the gunmen had chased him into a nearby bush after discovering that bullets could not penetrate his body.
After he was captured alive, the invaders killed him and brought the remains back to his compound; dismembered the body, and later paraded his head around the community.
An eyewitness recounted the sad event thus; “Some cult boys came into our community last night. They killed the Commander of OSPAC in the community. They came to his house shot him severally but the gunshots did not affect him.
“He later escaped and ran into the bush. But they still went after him. They caught and killed him.”
“The killing was horrible. They returned his body to their compound and cut it into pieces. They cut his head and carried it around the community before taking their leave”, the source lamented.
