With the simmering political tension in Rivers State taking different worrying dimensions daily, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George says the crisis rocking the South South State could easily spread across Nigeria if not resolved as soon as possible.

Accordingly, Chief George has pleaded with the warring factions to embrace peace in the interest of Nigeria, even as he charged the PDP leadership to intervene and resolve the crisis immediately.

Speaking on an Arise Television interview on Thursday, the former PDP’s National Vice Chairman, South-West zone, said, “Rivers is a very very important state electoral-wise. The crisis can spread to other parts of the country.

“I want to plead with all sides in the interest of this nation. This is not the time to fight; our economic situation is terrible. People are hungry and angry.”

Cautioning that the crisis should be effectively handled before it snowballs into something far too humongous to address, the Military Governor of old Ondo State queried; Where is the leader of the PDP? What’s he doing? The party leaders should defend and resolve this crisis.”

With the Rivers House of Assembly as the epicentre of the current crisis, the South-South state is witnessing an avalanche of political manoeuvrings and intrigues occasioned by the bitter rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.

In a related development, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Chinedu Mmom, has reportedly joined the list of those who have called it quits from the Rivers State Executive Council as of Thursday, December 14, 2023.

In his resignation letter dated December 14, 2023, and addressed to Governor Fubara through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Mmom said; “I hereby resign my appointment as the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Rivers State for personal reasons.

“I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the opportunity given to me to serve in your administration and wish you the best as you carry on with the governance of the state.”

So far, of the six commissioners who have submitted their resignation letters, five of them served under former Governor Wike’s administration in the same capacity, while Woke was Wike’s Chief of Staff for eight years.
