A Bishop of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Onuoha, has warned that except needed and necessary actions are taken to stem the ugly political tide, the crisis rocking Rivers State may snowball into unquantifiable national crisis.

Bishop Unuoha therefore called on elder statesmen in the country to take thebull by the horn and call a spade a spade by cautioning the dramatis personae that are bent on creating crisis for their selfish ends by fueling political instability in Rivers State.

The Bishop, who stated these while commenting on the crack between the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, stressed that if something urgent was not done, it could become catastrophic for the nation.

He also called on men and women of conscience from across the country to rise up and defend the nation’s democracy.

Following the conduct of Local Government elections in Rivers State on Saturday and subsequent swearing-in of elected chairmen and councilors, political turmoil engulfed the state on Monday, October 7, 2024 that led to the burning of some Councils secretariat.

The local government election conducted without the participation of the Nigeria police witnessed the Action People’s Party (APP) clinching 22 chairmanship positions while the Action Alliance won of the seats.

The State had been experiencing serious crises following the political differences between the former governor of the State, Nyesom Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.
