Scam: NNPC Paid Fuel Subsidy On Non-Existing Pipelines – Ex-Gov Yuguda
Former Governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yuguda on Monday, accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), of serious involvement in the petroleum subsidy scam in the country that lingered for decades.
Yuguda, who made the accusation when he featured as guest on Channels Television Programme; ‘Sunrise Daily’, said that when he served as the chairman of a sub-committee on Petroleum Subsidy in the country during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2009, it was discovered that the NNPC paid huge sums of monies as subsidies on pipelines that were not in existence.
Yuguda, who was also Minister of State for Transportation and Aviation, noted that the subsidy regime was quite disturbing and worrisome, adding that it was really difficult to determine how much the Federal Government was paying on subsidy as the books were not clear to anyone except those that concocted them.
The former Bauchi governor also said that his committee submitted a report to President Jonathan on the scam, adding however that the recommendations contained in the report were not implemented.
He also said that surprisingly, when President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in spite of the fact that he acknowledged that subsidy was a scam, also failed to act on the dicey issue.
Yuguda further said; “Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, hired some chartered accountants to probe the subsidy claims and found out that N2 Billion dollars were spent on fuel subsidies. That was where it ended,” he said.
