Senator Adamu Emerges National Chairman of APC As Al-Makura, Akume, Musa, Others Stepped Down
Following the selection of Senator Abdullahi Adamu by President Muhammadu Buhari and his adoption by Governors and delegates to the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), supporters of other chairmanship candidates left the venue of the convention dejected on Saturday.
Six national chairmanship aspirants of the APC stepped down at the Eagle square venue of the national convention of the ruling party that witnessed a situation in which supporters of the candidates left the venue in pains and dejection as they were seen groaning and complaining against the decision that forced their choice candidates to step down on the directive of President Buhari.
The supporters immediately trooped out of the convention venue and left for their various States saying that the choice of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as national chairman was anything but democracy.
The other six chairmanship aspirants that were hitherto contesting against the endorsed candidate of President Buhari as the next national chairman of the APC eventually stepped down.
Their decision of the six candidates to step down was conveyed in a letter by one of the candidates, Senator George Akume, who is the Minister of Special Duties. Their stepping down finally cleared the coast for the emergence of the former governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the new national chairman.
Before the letter by Senator Akume, the governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, who was championing the candidacy of his predecessor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, confirmed on Channels TV programme – ‘Politics Today’ on Friday that the leadership of the party has chosen Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the consensus candidate for the position of party chairman.
In the words of Sule; “Consensus is one of the requirements. It is provided in our constitution and it is not against the Electoral Act”.
Similarly, the President of the Senatr, Ahmed Lawan had announced that the APC had agreed to produce consensus candidates with a ‘Unity List’ to be put in place.
