Smuggled Weapons: Turkish Ambassador Visits Customs Boss
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – The Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Hakan Cakil, on Tuesday visited the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col Hameed Ali (retd), over the seized 2,671 Pump Action Rifles allegedly smuggled into the country from Turkey.
According to a statement by the NCS spokesman, Joseph Attah, the meeting between Cakil and Ali was conducted in an atmosphere of frank talk on how to tackle the problems of smuggling weapons from Turkey.
The meeting, which lasted for about two hours, was detailed with specific commitments and strategies to stem the ugly trend of weapons from Turkey.
The statement explained that four shipments were intercepted with false declaration on the bill of lading. The Turkish Ambassador restated his country’s support for Nigeria’s security and well-being, assured that the government of Turkey was committed to cooperating with Nigeria to deal decisively with those found involved.
