Super Falcons Thrash New Zealand 3-0 In Comfortable Victory
Nigeria’s Women National Football team, the Super Falcons, were clinical in front of goal, as they easily overwhelmed FIFA Women’s World Cup co-host, New Zealand 3-0 in their international friendly played in far away Antalya, Turkey.
Utilizing the international window to further prepare for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup in July, the Falcons were impressive in wrapping their two-game friendlies with the victory against the Football Ferns.
With this defeat, New Zealand are now winless in 10 consecutive matches preparatory to the World Cup tournament.
In their earlier match, Falcons’ Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala both scored in their 2-1 win against Haiti.
This second friendly against New Zealand, which took place at the Emir Sport Stadium, was another good outcome for Randy Waldrum whose girls came out blazing.
Interestingly, it was Centre Back (CB), Onome Ebi who opened scoring in the 35th minute, for her third ever international goal, the most scored by a Nigerian CB.
The Falcons went into the break with the narrow lead, but returned stronger and in the 48th minute Onyi Echegini doubled Nigeria’s advantage.
The 66 year-old Coach Waldrum, who did not bring about much change to how the Falcons played against Haiti with his starting personnel, however made three changes after the break and before the third goal.
One of the substitute, Desire Oparanozie scored in stoppage time for her first international goal since 2019.
Oparanozie found the back of the net in the fourth minute of added time to complete the rout and with it Nigeria’s tour in Turkey with back to back wins.
