- Two persons sustain injuries
Five persons reportedly died while two others sustained injuries in a road accident that occurred on Thursday at a suburb of Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Reports indicated that the crash, involving a Nissan Sunny car and a DAF tipper truck, took place around 9:00 am at a junction close to the Ilu-Abo community in Akure North Local Government Area.
It was reliably gathered that the victims were traders heading to sell their goods at the market in Ogbese, a neighboring community in the local government.
Confirming the incident, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in the state, Samuel Ibitoye, attributed the cause to over speeding.
According to him, “Seven people were involved, five were killed – comprising one male adult, three female adults, and one female child – while two others sustained injuries.”
Ibitoye disclosed that the remains of the dead victims had been deposited in the mortuary at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, by personnel from the FRSC Owo Unit Command.
Lamenting the rising cases of avoidable accidents on major routes across the state, the FRSC Commander said the Corps had intensified engagements with tipper drivers and other motorists along the Akure-Ogbese axis to promote safer driving practices.
He expressed sadness at the tragic occurrence and appealed to drivers to always ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent crashes caused by mechanical faults.
“We urge motorists to adopt defensive driving techniques, especially during the ember months. Motorists are advice to always drive responsibly to safeguard lives and support national development”, he added
The accident comes on the heels of a multiple auto-crash at the Kara Bridge end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that led to the death of a policeman and about five other persons.
Available reports said the accident, which occured on Wednesday night, involved some trucks, including a fuel tanker, that collided on the bridge.
In the process, one of the victims was burnt beyond recognition while the incident cause gridlock along the road and spilled to other parts of Ogun and Lagos.
Unfortunately, the incident left many commuters stranded for the better part of the day with many of the road users resorting to trekking to work and businesses beat the heavy traffic holdup.
