The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, on Thursday, departed for Edo State to further build on the peace initiative and calm tension over the recent killings of 16 travellers in Uromi community of the State
Gwarzo is leading a high-powered committee set-up by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano with the mandate to assuage frayed nerves and rebuild confidence among residents of the affected communities traumatized by the tragic incident that occurred late last month.
A statement by Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, confirmed that the Committee is tasked with a fact-finding and peace-building mission to the South South State.
He said the Committee’s membership comprises prominent individuals, including the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Mohammad Isa Umar; Commissioners for Religious Affairs, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Special Duties and Women Affairs; as well as Chairman of Bunkure Local Government Area among other top government officials.
Shu’aibu said the Committee was specifically established in response to outrage and growing concerns over the violent attacks in Uromi, which claimed several lives and displaced many residents, including indigenes of Kano State residing in the community and its environs.
Addressing reporters at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport before embarking on the trip, Deputy Governor Gwarzo stressed that the Committee is committed to justice, peace, and reconciliation of all parties concerned.
According to him; “Our mandate is clear, to investigate, to consult and to recommend sustainable solutions. This is not just a fact-finding mission, but a peace-building initiative aimed at restoring confidence and preventing further violence.
“The tragic incident, which occurred last month, has heightened tensions in the affected community. As part of its assignment, the Committee is scheduled to hold consultations with the Edo State Governor, heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations during its week-long stay.”
Gwarzo further explained thus; “This initiative forms part of a broader intervention by the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) to demonstrate solidarity, promote national unity and respond proactively to rising insecurity across the country”.
