Despite soaring to an impressive 3-0 lead by the 67th minute of play, Nigeria’s Super Eagles experienced tough time easing past the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in their second Group C match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco on Saturday night.
But it was the trio of Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman that made it happened for Nigeria being on target to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Tunisia.
The game played in Fes witnessed a thrilling end as the Tunisians threatened ceaselessly and almost pulled off a comeback that would have left the Coach Eric Chelle men and the teeming Nigerian football fans terribly stunned.
With an impressive dominance of proceedings from the start, the Super Eagles finally broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Osimhen headed in a Lookman cross just before halftime.
The Nigerians sustained their supremacy as the second half flagged-off, with Ndidi netting the second from another Lookman assist in the 50th minute.
The Atalanta of Italy’s forward then took his turn to make it 3-0 for Nigeria from Osimhen’s assist with 67 minutes of the high stakes game gone.
However, the Carthage Eagles dug deep, exhibiting greater zeal and urgent to save the day. Interestingly, their efforts paid off as they succeeded in pulling one back through Montassar Talbi on 74 minutes.
Not done yet, the North Africans piled up more pressure on Nigeria, and a handball in the box by Osayi-Samuel gave away a penalty against Nigeria which was neatly despatched by Ali Abdi in the 87th minute.
