BY MELVIN UCHE, MAIDUGURI – No fewer than seven persons, comprising four suicide bombers and three civilians have been confirmed dead, while two others sustained various degrees of injuries from two separate attacks in Borno villages that took place on Monday.
The first attack, which occurred early in the morning at Mammanti village in Jere Local Government Area left three suicide bombers dead, while the second attack at Mainari Kanuri village left a suicide bomber and three villagers dead.
Musa Aliyu, a member of the Civilian JTF in Mammanti village, who confirmed the first attack, said the three female suicide bombers, who targeted worshippers, came in around 5:30am during Muslim morning prayers when dogs in the village barked and alerted members of the Civilian JTF in the village. They were later intercepted them and detonated the IED strapped to her body, while the other two who tried to escape were shot dead by soldiers.
The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Damian Chukwu, who confirmed the attacks, said the EOD of his Command that was drafted to the scene has since rendered the area safe.
According to him, “Today at about 05:10hrs , three female suicide bombers attempted to infiltrate Mammanti village in Jere Local Government Area. They were intercepted by Civilian JTF. In the process, one of the bombers detonated IED strapped to her body, killing herself alone .
“The other two tried to escape but were shot dead by security personnel on duty. EOD unit of my Command have been drafted to the scene to sanitize and render the area safe.
“Again at about 07:30hrs another suicide bomb incident was foiled at Mainari Kanuri village along Damboa-Biu road in the outskirt of Maiduguri town. A suspected Boko Haram terrorist, who disguised as cart pusher, was intercepted by residents of the village.
“He detonated the IED on the cart, killing himself and three nearby villagers , while two other civilians sustained injuries . Both scenes have since been rendered safe and normalcy restored.”
