A total of seven persons lost their lives in accidental drowning across Lagos State in the last one week, according to the State Police Command.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, broke the sad news in a statement on Friday, confirming that the unfortunate deaths occurred in different parts of the state.
Hundeyin explained that these regrettable incidents were recorded at areas that include hotel swimming pools, a beach, and the Third Mainland Bridge.
The statement stated thus; “This week alone, seven people drowned in hotel, swimming pools and beach. Two in one hotel in Mushin, One in one hotel on the Island, One on Ibeshe Island, Two fell off Third Mainland Bridge in an accident, another one in one hotel in Shasha.”
The Police Spokesman’s statement comes on the heels of the latest incident where two passengers reportedly fell into the lagoon on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, after a commercial bus crashed in a lone accident on the recently re-opened Third Mainland Bridge.
The accident saw other occupants of the vehicle being hospitalised after sustaining varying degrees of injuries
Commenting on the incident, the South West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, attributed the accident to speeding, saying the 18-seater bus driver unfortunately swerved off the road and hit the bridge rails having lost control of the vehicle.
Farinloye said in a statement that the impact of the crash had two passengers, a male and a female, losing their balance and falling off the bus into the lagoon in the process.
