Agitation For Scrapping Of SIEC: Dangerous For Nation’s Democracy – PLASIEC Chair
The chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Mr Plangji Cishak has said that the agitation in some quarters for the scrapping of the State Independent National will not augur for the collective aspirations of the people for the creation of strong democratic structures at the grassroots.
He also said that such a move is clearly against the provisions of the Constitution and could be catastrophic to the nation’s democracy.
Cishak, who stated these at a press conference ahead of the 13th National Conference of the Forum of Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON), to be hosted in Plateau State, said that instead of the calls for the scrapping of the SIEC. There should be the need for a comprehensive reform, capacity-building and the standardisation of processes across the country.
In the words of Cishak; “Here in Plateau, we have shown that SIECs can work if given the right leadership, resources, and institutional backing. The October 2024 local elections, though not without challenges, remain a reference point for what is possible.
“The upcoming conference is therefore another opportunity to shape the national narrative around local elections and democratic accountability”.
The PLASIEC chairman explained that the 3-day event is scheduled to take place from May 21 to 23, 2025 in Jos, Plateau State, adding that central to the conversation will be the future of SIECs.
Cishak also said; “The theme for this year’s conference is both timely and compelling: “Local Government Elections in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities.” It is a theme that calls for sober reflection, informed debate, and actionable outcomes.
“We expect to welcome no fewer than 304 delegates drawn from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. These will include Chairmen, Commissioners, and Secretaries of various State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).”
The PLASIEC chairman said the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, will chair the event that will have in attendance three serving governors, representatives of the Forum of Nigerian House of Assembly Speakers, and members of the National Assembly committees on Electoral Matters.
He said that their participation underscores the national significance of the issues on the table and reflects a shared commitment to strengthening local governance through credible elections.
He expressed appreciation to DAI International Development for its support and collaboration in working with FOSIECON and other institutions to advance electoral reforms, civic engagement, and institutional resilience.
