Alleged Stealing Of Mum’s Wrapper: Vigilantes Torture An Undergraduate To Death in Bauchi
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – A 21 year old undergraduate of the Bauchi State University, Gadau, Abdulsalam Ibrahim has been allegedly tortured to death by members of a neighborhood Vigilante Group popularly known as ‘Yan Komiti’ in Zango area of Bauchi metropolis.
It was gathered that the late Abdulsalam, who until his untimely death was a 300 level Political Science student of the University and a promising, hardworking young man.
When contacted, the Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident saying that already it has arrested three of the suspects who are members of the neighborhood Vigilante Group.
The Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Wakili said that one of the suspects is still on the run adding however that efforts are on to track him as investigations is ongoing after which the suspects would be prosecuted.
Wakil said that it was a case of culpable homicide by causing grievous harm leading to death, adding that the three suspects that were apprehended included the principal suspect, one Adamu Babayo, Sani Babayo and one Abubakar.
The PPRO explained that the incident occurred when the late Abulsalam’s mother, Mrs Aisha Ibrahim called members of the Vigilante group to discipline him for allegedly stealing one of her wrappers estimated to cost about N10,000.
Efforts to get the father of the late Abdulsalam, Alhaji Ibrahim, a driver with the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) did not yield any result as his phone number did not go through as of the time of filing this report on Tuesday.
Our correspondent reports that prior to the gruesome murder of the latest victim, there have been series of complaints on the way and manner adopted by the local Vigilante groups in carrying out their community policing system with the general consensus been that the vigilantes (Yan Komiti) seem to be carrying out jungle justice on their victims through torture to extract confession from them.
