ATBU Students To Undergo Compulsory ICT Training
…Establishes computing faculty to promote digital economy
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, ABUJA – Effective from next academic session, every student from 200 level in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi must undergo a compulsory ICT training in line with best global best education program in the digital industry.
Also, the University has concluded plans to establish a Computing Faculty which will offer degree in all aspects of computer technology to complement the Computer Science programme currently being run in the university.
All these are part of the determined efforts of the institution not to be left behind in the era of digital economy and other digitization processes which led to the establishment of an ICT Academy by Huawei Technology company as part of its resolve to boost digital technology of the country.
These were made known by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Mohammed Abdulaziz during the handing over of ICT Lab equipment donated by Huawei Technology company to the university, who also said that digitization is the new realization now, the world over.
Abdulaziz said that it is going to be economically beneficial if the country embrace the ongoing 5G connectivity considering the fact that Speedy performance is needed in order to enhance digital economy delivery services across the country.
The VC opined that while we in Nigeria are still struggling to migrate from 3G to 4G other countries are now aiming for a higher digital efficiency by planning to migrate to 6G saying, “we cannot afford to be left behind in the emerging digital world”.
The Vice chancellor commended Huawei Company for finding ATBU worthy to be selected as Center of digital excellence in the North East sub-region.
While presenting the laboratory equipment to the university, the Nigeria representative of Huawei, Kenneth Igwe explained that his organization is collaborating with Nigerian universities in order to promote digital connectivity.
Igwe said that with the collaboration, many Nigerian students have visited Huawei headquarters in China for further research and development studies stressing that the importance of digital research cannot be overemphasized in the development of the country.
He added that the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy has been the main driver of the programme because the focus is to ensure that the country developed its digital base in order to compete with other global economies.
The Huawei Nigeria representative assured that the company will equip the ICT department of ATBU just as it has done in other universities across the country stressing that ATBU has been identified as the Digital center of excellence in the North East sub-region where other universities and institutions are to visit for patronage.
