Benue: BudgIT Applauds Gov. Alia’s Fiscal Prudence, Transparency
Governor Hyacinth Alia’s prudent management of resources and openness in governance have received a boost following the acknowledgement by various monitoring organisations in the country with pedigree in consistent assessment of the states of the federation’s fiscal transparency.
One of such organisations is BudgIT, a civic organisation that uses creative technology to simplify public information, thereby stimulate community of active citizens and enable their right to demand accountability, institutional reforms, efficient service delivery and an equitable society.
BudgIT, in its release of Q3 2024 States Fiscal Transparency League Table, stated that Benue State has moved to 9th position from the 35 & 36 positions it had consistently shuffled since 2015.
Similarly, another release by the Debt Management Office (DMO), indicates that the external debt profile of the Benue State Government under the supervision of Governor Alia, has witnessed a sharp decrease of $2.82 million (N4,532,038,130.40) between June 2023 and June 2024.
The report specifically stated that Benue has not borrowed any funds since the inception of the Alia administration; adding that, instead, the State has paid off $2.82 million (N4,532,038,130.40) to reduce the state’s debt burden.
Governor Alia’s administration inherited over N350 billion in debts from the previous administration, a development that has made the Alia administration to be cautious about taking loans.
Despite the huge loans and various payments being made, Governor Alia has been able to still initiate numerous projects across the state, with many already completed.
A statement by Sir Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, said that Governor Alia is changing the narrative for good governance as he is massively delivering dividends of democracy to the people.
Kula further said that Alia is consistent in his insistence that the future of the state comes first, and has demonstrated the highest level of decision making and resources management.
