Dele Farotimi Remains In Detention As Court Defers Decision
An Ekiti State Magistrate Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, has deferred its decision on the bail application of human rights lawyer and activist. Mr Dele Farotimi to December 20, 2024.
Farotimi was arrested in Lagos and moved to Ado-Eliti following a petition on alleged defamation filed by a legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN).
Farotimi was subsequently charged and arraigned at the Ekiti State Magistrate Court last Wednesday, where the Court presided over by Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ordered that he should be remanded at a correctional facility.
The court had earlier granted some stringent bail conditions that included a ₦50 million bond, a surety residing in Ekiti State with landed property, and the surrendering of Farotimi’s travel passport.
With the adjournment, Farotimi will be expected to remain in detention for the next 10 days as the court will consider his bail application.
The case has attracted and generated so much attention, with advocates questioning the implications for free speech and the legal boundaries of defamation.
