Biliri Crisis: Governor Yahaya Vows To Bring Perpetrators To Book
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, IN GOMBE –Governor Inuwa Yahaya on Saturday visited Billiri town to assess the level of damage recorded as a result of the violent protests by some people in the area which led to the death of three persons while properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed.
Governor Yahaya, who had to cut short his official engagements in Abuja, had upon his arrival, proceeded straight to Billiri to see things for himself and sympathised with the victims of the mayhem.
Speaking to Journalists at the popular Kantoma market which was incinerated by the protesters, the Governor condemned the dastardly act unleashed by those he described as “criminals and unpatriotic” citizens.
He however assured that government will intervene to ensure that those who lost their property are supported, promising that the perpetrators of the wanton destruction and their sponsors will be fished out to face the wrath of the law.
The Governor also said the incident represents a serious threat to peace and stability of Gombe State.
According to him; “Government is still on the selection process of appointing a new Mai but some forces took advantage of the development to cause mayhem just to achieve their personal goal which as you all witnessed today resulted to loss of lives and property.
“We condemn the criminal behaviour and actions committed by those unscrupulous elements and we sympathise with the families of those who lost their lives and property in this unfortunate incident”.
Yahaya said the 24 hour curfew imposed on the Local Government Area will remain in effect until normalcy is restored.
The Governor was accompanied on the visit by his deputy, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau, the Speaker of Gombe State House of Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Luggerewo, Majority leader and some members of the House, the SSG, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abubakar Inuwa Kari, Commissioner for Internal Security, Commissioner of Police, Director SSS among others.
