COVID-19: Bauchi Chief Judge of Bauchi Frees 8 Inmates From Custodial Centre
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – Following the Presidential directives for the decongestion of Custodial Centres across the country as a means of curbing the spread of COVID-19 amongst inmates, the Administration of Criminal Justice Committee headed by the Chief Judge of Bauchi State, Justice Rabi T. Umar, has released eight inmates from the Bauchi Custodial Centre.
Justice Umar alongside the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Bauchi chapter, representative of the Commissioner of Police, and other members of the committee in the State, visited the Bauchi Custodial Centre, reviewed cases of Awaiting Trial Persons, who have spent four years and above without their cases being determined and subsequently released eight deserving ones.
The State Chief Judge advised the released detainees to be of good behavior and shun crime as they go back to their various communities.
Justice Umar assured that the committee will soon visit other Custodial Centres in the State to carry out similar exercise.
In his remarks, the Controller of Corrections, Bauchi State Command, Suleiman T. Suleiman thanked the Chief Judge and other members of the Committee for the exercise noting that it will go a long way in decongesting the Correctional facilities thereby reducing the risk of contracting the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world.
A statement by Command Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, Bauchi, DSC Adam Abubakar Jibrin, said the exercise is a continuous one as other Custodial Centers across the state will be visited very soon.
