President Muhammadu Buhari and members of his entourage to the United Kingdom have gone into isolation in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols and guidelines.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the development in Abuja on Sunday, saying it was meant to fulfill existing health protocols put in place by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

According to the presidential aide, President Buhari is going into quarantine based on NCDC’s guidelines regarding international travels by Nigerians.

Responding to enquiries on the matter, Shehu is quoted as telling The Guardian that the President and members of his delegation are necessarily in isolation to ensure nothing goes wrong.

“Mr President and all of those on his delegation will isolate in line with NCDC guidelines for international travel. They all tested yesterday (Friday) and will follow up with another test in due course,” the Presidential Spokesman said.

Though not confirmed, reports said upon arriving in the United Kingdom, where he joined other world leaders to make a firm commitment on increased funding of the education sector at the recent Global Education Summit, the President had close contact with some officials of the Nigerian High Commission.

Sources at the High Commission in London said some of these officials had previously tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19).

President Buhari returned to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Friday, after a trip to the United Kingdom, during which he saw his doctors.
