BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – With 248 new cases reported late on Sunday night, May 20, 2020, Nigeria’s tally of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases has now jumped to 4399 cases.

Confirming the figures in a tweet on its official handle, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said; “On the 10th of May 2020, 248 new confirmed cases and 17 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.”

Noting that no new state reported a case in the last 24 hours, the NCDC however admitted the increasing number of infections across the country as the figure of tested samples hits 23,835 mark while active cases now stand at 3,478

According to the NCDC’s figures, till date, 778 confirmed cases have been treated and discharged, even as the country has witnessed 143 deaths in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory since its index COVID-19 case was reported late February 2020

The NCDC gave a breakdown of the 248 new cases that were recorded in 17 states as follows: Lagos – (81); Jigawa- (35); Borno an Kano – (26) each; Bauchi – (20); and FCT – (13).

Others are Edo – (12); Sokoto – (10); Zamfara – Seven (7); Kwara and Kebbi – Four (4) each; Gombe, Taraba, Ogun and Ekiti – Two (2) each while Osun and Bayelsa bring up the rear with one (1) case each.

However, in reiterating its commitment to providing valid and accurate data nationwide, NCDC said due to system error, 32 discharged cases and two (2) deaths were wrongly announced on May 9, 2020.

Retracting its announcement of 45 discharged cases and four (4) deaths in FCT, the NCDC apologised “to @OfficialFCTA for this error”, saying; “Therefore, FCT recorded 13 discharged cases and two (2) deaths on May 9 2020”

Also, the Centre urged members of the public to “remember, rapid test kits can give false results”, assuring that; “We continue to scale up testing. Every state has been provided with supplies for sample collection.”
