BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – On a day Nigeria reported a total of 12,486 confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases as at Sunday, June 7, 2020, the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) says the good news is that about 3,959 patients have so far recovered from the virus infection nationwide.

This is as latest figures published by Johns Hopkins University indicate that 6,985,701 cases have been detected worldwide, with 401,933 deaths and 3,133,664 people fully recovered.

Giving insights on the statistics reported on its official website, NCDC said the country recorded 260 new cases of COVID-19 and 12 deaths in the last 24 hours.

According to the Centre, “On the 7th of June 2020, 260 new confirmed cases and 12 deaths were recorded in Nigeria. No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours.

“Till date, 12486 cases have been confirmed, 3959 cases have been discharged and 354 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

It also announced that of the 260 new cases reported from 19 states of the Federation on Sunday, Abia State temporarily dislodged Lagos on the daily log with Sixty-seven (67) cases. FCT placed second with Forty (40) cases while the virus epicentre, Lagos came third on the day with thirty-eight (38) cases.

The list also has Ogun – (19); Gombe – (16); Edo – (14); Imo – Nine (9); Kwara, Katsina, Nasarawa and Borno with Eight (8) cases each; Kaduna – (6); Bauchi – (5); Ekiti – (4); while Niger, Ondo, Plateau, Kano and Sokoto reported two (2) cases each.

However, the NCDC admitted in one of its numerous tweets that officials “erroneously reported seven (7) new cases in Jigawa”, adding; “Following further review, we can confirm that these were repeat tests for previously confirmed cases

“We apologise for this error and remain committed to ensuring transparent and accurate reporting of test results.”
