COVID-19 Update: No Stopping Rising Numbers, NCDC Reports 238 New Cases

  • Nigeria’s tally now 2,170 cases, 68 deaths

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – On a day that positive test by the founder of DAAR Communications Plc and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi and some of his family members sign-posted the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic space in Nigeria, the tally crossed over to 2,170 confirmed cases in the country.

Figures released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) indicated that as at Friday, May 1, 2020, the country again recorded another all-time high number of 238 new cases with ten (10) ten deaths.

However, with no new state reporting a case in the last 24 hours, 351 cases have been successfully treated and discharged from the various isolation centres nationwide.

This is even as the NCDC disclosed that the number of deaths recorded has risen to 68 in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In it further breakdown of the 238 new cases reported from twenty-two (22) states, Kano took the lead with Ninety-two (92) cases while the FCT and Lagos State recorded Thirty-six (36) and Thirty 30 cases respectively

Others are Gombe (16); Bauchi (10); Delta (8); Oyo (6); Zamfara and Sokoto (5) each; Ondo and Nasarawa (4) each; five states, Kwara, Edo, Ekiti, Borno and Yobe recorded three (3) cases each; Adamawa (2), with Niger, Imo, Ebonyi, Rivers and Enugu having one (1) case each

Meanwhile, in its May Day message to the Nigerian Workers, NCDC said, “To all essential workers in Nigeria. You are the pride of our nation. We need you to keep pushing. Please do not give up”

The Centre’s official website also quoted the Director General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu as saying; “I show appreciation to all workers in Nigeria.”
