A member of the Edo State House of Assembly, representing Oredo East Constituency, Hon. Frank Uyi Omosigho, has declared that the obnoxious and kangaroo impeachment launched against elected Local Government Chairmen by some sponsored Councillors in the State cannot stand the test of time and the law.

Omosigho, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, stressed that as far as he was concerned and in the eyes of the law, the alleged impeachment of the duly elected Council Chairmen remains illegal, null and void.

He stressed that impeachment must follow due process of law to the letter, emphasising that the sponsorship of one or two persons to sit and pronounce impeachment against a Council Chairman cannot stand.
Omosigho, who stated these while chatting with journalists in Benin, specifically said that in his Oredo local government area, where the 12 duly elected Councillors could not be reached, noted that others who allegedly carried out the impeachment act in the local government were nothing but mere “impostors”.
The lawmaker said that he has continued to air his views and stand on the issue of the suspension and alleged impeachment of the local government Chairmen which he frowned at as anti-democratic.
Commenting on the suspension of the Chairmen by the State House of Assembly, Omosigho stressed that he was never in support of the suspension carried out by the House, saying that he opposed it owing to some relevant sections of the constitution which he used to back his points.
Omosigho said; “But as you are aware, in a democratic setting, the majority always have their way while the minority will have their say”.
The lawmaker however said that he would not be able to speak further on the matter since it is already before a competent court for adjudication.
Omosigho also decried the present spate on insecurity in parts of the State, citing Edo Central where the governor hails from as a case study.
He therefore challenged the Edo State Government and relevant security agencies to tackle the menace of kidnappings and incessant killings in the State.

He said; “Security of lives and property is a primary responsibility of the government”.
Omosigho also noted that development in the form of the provision of infrastructure, reforms, human capital, among others has not impacted any part of his constituency, stressing that Governor Ikpebholo’s promise of “A New Edo Is Rising”, has not been actualized in any sector of the State’s economy.

He however sued for more time to allow Okpebholo-led government understudy governance procedures it inherited from the past administration.
