Twenty-one inmates of Sokoto Central Prison on Thursday got their freedom following a surprise Eid-el-kabir package from Senator Aliyu Wamakko, representing Sokoto North Senatorial District.

Wamakko, a former governor of the State, secured the inmates’ release after paying their various fines totalling about N2.1 million.

Represented at the event by Mr Bashir Jodi, Secretary, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko Free Legal Services, Wamakko said, “The gesture is aimed at enabling the beneficiaries to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir with their various families; such kind of philanthropic acts are highly encouraged during the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah.”

The Senator, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, admonished the freed inmates to shun all infamous acts and activities that would see them being sent back to jail.

In their separate comments, the jubilant beneficiaries praised the former governor for the gesture and promised to shun crimes and other wayward behaviours.
