Facebook Joins Twitter in Deleting Buhari’s Comment on Civil War

The Federal Government may have ignited a social media battle it might not be able to prosecute, talk more of winning with its slamming of indefinite suspension on Twitter which deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet for what the microblogging platform considered as offensive and against its rules.

Shortly after announcing the suspension of Twitter, Facebook joined Twitter in deleting President Buhari’s civil war comments as well for “violating its standards against inciting violence”.

President had threatened punishment for regional secessionists blamed for attacks on government buildings.

Buhari said on Tuesday when he received the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), that “many people misbehaving today were too young to remember the deaths and destruction from the civil war”.

Following the announced suspension of Twitter by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, Facebook moved and quickly removed Buhari’s post from its platform.

Buhari’s entire statement has been successfully removed from the social media platform for violating Community Standards against inciting violence.

The social media organisation stressed its commitment towards removing any content, from individuals or organisations that violates Facebook policies.

It states; “In line with our global policies, we’ve removed a post from President Buhari’s Facebook page for violating our Community Standards against inciting violence.

“We remove any content, from individuals or organisations that violates our policies on Facebook.”

Recall that micro-blogging platform, Twitter, also deleted Buhari’s tweet where he issued a threat to deal with “misbehaving” elements in “the language they understand”, while making reference to Nigeria’s civil war. (CKN)

Defending its action, the company said Buhari’s tweet violated its rules.
