As part of its deft moves to beat the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties to submit names of their candidates for the 2023 General Elections, the Labour Party (LP) on Friday submitted the name of Dr. Doyin Okupe, as its Vice presidential candidate.
Okupe, who announced this on Friday when he featured on Channels Television political programme ‘Politics Today’ however said that circumstances threw him up as the interim Vice-presidential candidate to the party’s flag bearer, Mr. Peter Obi pending final consultations and choice of the actual running mate.
Okupe pointedly said that he was holding the position in trust for the rightful owner, adding that the party took the route to beat the Friday, June 17, 2022 deadline set by INEC for the submission of names of candidates.
According to him, the Labour Party remains open to formation of a behemoth of political force to fight All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming presidential election.
Okupe explained that the LP Presidential candidate joined the party about three weeks ago and need more time to study situation and consult more widely before arriving at the desired position to face the General Elections.
It was being rumoured that Mr. Peter Obi was consulting with the former Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, to accepting the being a running mate in the 2023 presidential poll.
